INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN TIPS: Group Work
Manage a Group: Once created, how is a group managed?
How are roles - recorder, convener, time-keeper - decided?
How are research and writing tasks distributed among the membership?
Who holds members responsible when tasks are left incomplete?
Who 'cleans up' after ineffective members? How are problems and
conflicts resolved?
Faculty-Managed Groups
The instructor assigns roles and tasks as well as monitoring and
participating in any group discussion forums.
Student-Managed Groups
Students work out among themselves who will do which tasks or fill
which roles inside the group. Discussion threads are created and
maintained entirely by the students themselves.
Student/Faculty Combination
The instructor provides guidelines for student roles inside the group -
perhaps providing a list of functions [see sample] and requesting roles
rotate amongst the members.
Mechanics
Only the instructor can change the composition of an existing Blackboard
group, or change the combination of tools available to a group. In addition,
only the instructor can create a discussion forum for a group. For more
information refer to ITD's online training module or the printable quickguide.
