INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN TIPS: Group Work
Create a Group: Who decides group membership?
Faculty-Created Groups
The instructor determines group membership either by random (alphabetically,
for example) or by balancing experience, knowledge, or other factors.
[HINT: use a formative assessment to measure students' existing knowledge
of a subject prior to assigning them to a group. QuickData
inputs online responses directly into a downloadable spreadsheet, making
data easy to view and compare. [Assessment Example.]
Self-Selected Groups
Students decide for themselves, based upon their role or interests,
in which group they will participate. [HINT: Students sign up for
a group using a Blackboard discussion forum. The instructor types out a
new thread for each topic or case along with the number of students who
can participate. Students sign up on a first-come-first-served basis by
replying to the topic thread of their choice. Screenshot Example]
Groups of One
Each student is assigned their own Blackboard group. Because the
instructor is the only other person who can access that group,
this becomes a 'safe' and centralized place for one-on-one work
between the instructor and student: journaling, weekly learning
summaries, reflection-on-practice, etc.
Mechanics
Only the instructor can create a group in Blackboard. Refer to
ITD's online training module or the printable quickguide.
