INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN TIPS: Adding Content

Learning Styles - How can I address different learning styles?

Learning Styles are the preference the learner has for how information is presented. This is the way the person learns most effectively. It does not mean that a student can only learn this way. However, in order to maximize learning for all your students, a combination of methods for presenting materials is very powerful.

Learning Style Preference for information acquisition Best online learning formats
Visual/Verbal Prefers to read information PDFs or RTFs that can be printed out; discussion forums
Visual/Nonverbal Uses graphics or diagrams to represent information Still images or video representations
Auditory/Verbal Prefers to listen to information Audio of course lectures; audio interviews with subject-matter experts
Tactile/Kinesthetic Prefers physical hands-on experiences Field work or labs offline, paired with reflection and discussion online
