INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN TIPS: Assessments

General notes regarding online quizzes

The following notes regarding online quizzes should facilitate maximizing the benefits of online quizzes:
  • Online quizzes should not be used for graded assessments unless they the quizzes are provided in a proctored environment
  • Online quizzes are typically best suited for formative, non graded assessments such as self-tests or surveys
  • Online quizzes that use fill in the blank questions should support multiple spellings of the correct answers (e.g. theatre and theater)
  • Online quizzes should take into account of the potential of timing out and disconnection of network/Internet connections
  • Although randomized questions may facilitate deterring cheating, they may be statistically unfair in the distribution of questions
