Using Audio and Video

Video Sources

Step 2: Record / Identify Sources

After you have identified that video and/or audio is appropriate for your application, you will need to determine where and how you will get source material. Sources can come from either existing materials, or you may record it yourself, or you may use a combination of the two. The quality of the source materials will determine the quality of the final product. If you are starting with a poor quality source, the quality will not improve and will be reflected in the final output.

Possible existing sources:

  • VHS tapes (poor quality)
  • MiniDV or other video camera formats (generally high quality)
  • DVD (high quality)
  • CDs (high quality)
  • Audio cassette players, record players or other audio players (sometimes poor quality)

Possible recording options:

  • MiniDV video/audio using our Faculty Video Kit
  • CD audio using MARS
  • MiniDisc audio using MARS2
